Plagued by vivid nightmares of the summer house he had shared with his late wife, grieving widower Mike Noonan returns to his former Maine getaway, only to find a town in the grip of a ruthless millionaire and tormented by a series of ghostly visitations

Blackwell North Amer
Set in the Maine territory King has made mythic, Bag of Bones recounts the plight of forty-year-old bestselling novelist Mike Noonan, who is unable to stop grieving even four years after the sudden death of his wife, Jo and who can no longer bear to face the blank screen of his word processor.
Now his nights are plagued by vivid nightmares of the house by the lake. Despite these dreams, or perhaps because of them, Mike finally returns to Sara Laughs, the Noonans' isolated summer home.
He finds his beloved Yankee town familiar on its surface, but much changed underneath - held in the grip of a powerful millionaire, Max Devore, who twists the very fabric of the community to his purpose: to take his three-year-old granddaughter away from her widowed young mother. As Mike is drawn into their struggle, as he falls in love with both of them, he is also drawn into the mystery of Sara Laughs, now the site of ghostly visitations, ever-escalating nightmares, and the sudden recovery of his writing ability. What are the forces that have been unleashed here - and what do they want of Mike Noonan?

Stephen King's most gripping and unforgettable novel, Bag of Bones, is a story of grief and a lost love's enduring bonds, of a new love haunted by the secrets of the past, of an innocent child caught in a terrible crossfire. Set in the Maine territory King has made mythic, Bag of Bones recounts the plight of forty-year-old bestselling novelist Mike Noonan, who is unable to stop grieving even four years after the sudden death of his wife, Jo, and who can no longer bear to face the blank screen of his word processor. Now his nights are plagued by vivid nightmares of the house by the lake. Despite these dreams, or perhaps because of them, Mike finally returns to Sara Laughs, the Noonans' isolated summer home. He finds his beloved Yankee town familiar on its surface, but much changed underneath -- held in the grip of a powerful millionaire, Max Devore, who twists the very fabric of the community to his purpose: to take his three-year-old granddaughter away from her widowed young mother. As Mike is drawn into their struggle, as he falls in love with both of them, he is also drawn into the mystery of Sara Laughs, now the site of ghostly visitations, ever-escalating nightmares, and the sudden recovery of his writing ability. What are the forces that have been unleashed here -- and what do they want of Mike Noonan? As vivid and enthralling as King's most enduring works, Bag of Bones resonates with what Amy Tan calls "the witty and obsessive voice of King's powerful imagination." It's no secret that King is our most mesmerizing storyteller. In Bag of Bones -- described by Gloria Naylor as "a love story about the dark places within us all" -- he proves to be one of our most moving.

This is a real chilling thriller! King is a great story teller. I wasn't able to put this down. King can be long-winded, but keep going because it is worth it. The end gets creepy! It's a real "haunting" piece of fiction, and definitely one of my favorite novels by Stephen King.

I'll have to try reading instead of listening to it. It's read by Stephen King himself who has a monotone voice and reads it all in one long run-on sentence. The audiobook is 17 hours long and I gave up 3 hours in.

This book had a little bit of everything, and kept me intrigued the whole time I was reading it. I could barely put this book down!!

I don't think I was in the mood to be told a ghost story when I picked up this book. My fault. I was on a plane, and not really into the bizarre plot structures and dreamlike prose. I'm sure it is a great book, but I just wasn't enticed.

This is my #1 favorite book by SK!!! LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!! I've read it twice and recommend it to anyone who wants to read a weird story. Just love this story!! I think this is hands down one of SK's best books!!! Its slow in parts, but it makes up for it with all the stuff that happens!! I love this book and recommend it highly. I plan on reading it again, or perhaps listening to the audio sometime, after I read all the books on my 'to read list'. This book has it all-love, sadness, grief, greed, fear, everything, on top of strangeness. I would love to see a movie of this, the visual effects would be astounding, I'm guessing.

Some Stephen king novels are good, but this is not. It is too long and boring to hold this reviewer's interest. 0 of 10 stars
