The plot follows a soldier who loses his memory during combat in WWI, but finds a new life and love. When his former memory returns he forgets his new life but always seems to know there is something missing. The 1942 film with Ronald Colman and Greer Garson is a great piece of film-making, but differs from the novel in one major point. The twist in the novel comes in the last sentence, but the movie couldn't have kept it from the viewer that long.
