This is one of the most fascinating books I've read. My family discovered it when it was on the new book shelf back in 1983 or so. Gottfried covers the nature of the disease and its flea carriers; discusses the nature of pandemics; the history of plague and its pandemics of the seventh century up through the long siege of pandemics from 1347 into the 18th century; and its effects on the world and civilization, from economy to culture and beyond.

This is history as it should be taught!
