I've enjoyed everything I've read by Sebastian Faulks and this is no exception. Without giving spoilers, I will say that the reader dreads that something dire and truly awful will happen to Anna, the somewhat hapless protagonist, but take heart: she survives and carries on, as so many in her generation did. Recommended.

Anna, a young French woman without family, seeks work at a hotel in small town France between the world wars. She falls in love with a kind-hearted married man, Charles Hartmann. Faulks slowly unpeels the layers of these very private characters’ memories of the Great War, memories that will always haunt them. Beautifully told; loved it.

Set in a small town in France in the 1930s, this is a tale of hopelessly romantic love -- moving and powerful in its impediments. Convincing characters in an evocative setting propelled by superior writing.

Never finished this book. Everything about it seems too dated. Maybe the author is trying to be clever by invoking another era but I just didn't buy into the mores and sensitivities of the era.
