They met in a Manhattan bookstore. Actress Johanna Brady was looking for something interesting to read when a stranger struck up a conversation with her. Only when he introduced himself as Matt Lang did she realize that he was the author of the novel she was holding in her hands. Flattered when he offered to sign it, and flustered when he asked her to have dinner with him, Joanna knew this was the start of something that would change her life forever. But when Matt said he had to leave New York for Maine to begin work on his next novel - an edgy psychological thriller - Johanna feared it would be over before it began, until he invited her to come along.
Yet soon after they arrived, Matt began to change. The caring man she had fallen in love with was gone. And as the days passed, Johanna watched him slip even deeper into an obsession with his work, and saw his behavior becoming more and more bizarre. There was the clothing he requested she wear, the scenes from his novel he wanted her to act out, and the probing questions about her most intimate dreams and fantasies.
Confused by what was happening, Johanna decided to chalk it up to the eccentricities of an artist in the throes of creativity. But that still didn't explain the threatening phone calls to the chateau in the middle of the night, the mysterious disappearance of a friend, or the arrival of a menacing stranger who claimed he was Matt's collaborator.
What began as a storybook romance was quickly turning into a terrifying nightmare, as horrifying as anything from one of Matt's novels.
