A gritty and articulate account of the author's experience with the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge.

His battalion (the 1st) had one of the toughest fights in the initial phases of the defence of the key road centre of Bastogne when it was sent to reinforce Team Desobry of CCB, 10th Armoured Division at Noville, a little to the northeast. Little did they know that they were taking on almost the entire 2nd Panzer Division.

Burgett is commendably forgiving of the fact that the battalion was foolishly sent on a suicidal counterattack on the German armour holding the surrounding high ground. Far too many paratroopers failed to return.

The book is a fascinating read, however, and offers us a glimpse into why the 101st along with the 82nd US Airborne Divisions were widely considered two of the very best divisions fielded by any army in WWII.
