Anita Brookner has turned out to be one of my favorite writers- surprising since I had never heard of her before reading "Howard's End is on the Landing" (hope I got that title right- it's a great book for recommendations.) Brookner's books are full of slowly and quietly building suspense. You don't see the shocking moment of personal revelation creeping up on you, among the peaceful undertakings of the characters. Try her- she's great!
