Excellent, historically, politically, and economically contextualized account of the rise to power of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, and the first woman President of an African nation. I strongly recommend, also, the film by Abigal Disney, Pray the Devil to Hell, which describes the role women, including market women, played in over-throwing Charles Taylor and, eventually, in electing Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. US women could learn much from Liberian women, including the author, who unhesitatingly chronicles the many and often horrific forms male dominance has taken in recent Liberian history, both domestically and politically. As a feminist anthropologist, who grew up reading about strong Women's societies [e.g. the Sande] of West Africa, this provides a useful, more contemporary perspective. It also illustrates the complexity of acquiring--and maintaining--political power....and of the significance of political leaders having strong global, institutional connections [e.g. World Bank, IMF, etc.].

An insightful biography about Ellen, who is a wonderful role model for all around the world, who strive for justice, and advocate for human rights!
