"What happens to the girl left behind? When a masked man with a gun enters a sandwich shop in broad daylight, Meredith Oliver suddenly finds herself ordered to the filthy floor, cowering face-to-face with her nemesis, Lisa Bellow, the most popular girl in her eighth grade class. Lying there, Meredith is utterly convinced she is going to die. Then the man orders Lisa Bellow to stand and come with him, leaving Meredith the girl left behind."--Book jacket.

This book is well written and it held my interest to the end, which I hated. I didn't feel like anything got resolved. I don't like suspense but the story seemed interesting. I guess this book is better suited to people who like deep, deep, deep stuff-I don't. I hated not knowing what was real and what was in the girl's imagination. I found her mother annoying and not very nice and her father a "nice" guy but wishy-washy. So even though it was well written I didn't like the book and won't want to read anything else by the author.

Meredith and Lisa, two eighth grade girls, are 13 and run in different social circles. Lisa is a queen bee and Meredith and her friends just hope to pass each day invisible to the queen bee hive. One fateful afternoon their lives converge with a devastating outcome. While largely Meredith's story, Meredith's mother, Claire, also tells her family's story through the lens of a mother's eye. Perabo does a wonderful job of weaving the theme of blindness, seeing, and shadow into the complexities of the story making it a richer experience.
