Not my favorite Philippa Gregory book. Elizabeth I is portrayed as an indecisive mess who seems to be entirely in the thrall of the men in her life. Robert Dudley is not likeable either, coming off as ambitious and cruel, and his wife Amy Dudley manages to be both pitiful and intensely irritating. The ending was quite abrupt as well.

This by far is one of the most intruiging books about QEI and the "would be" king and how she will never let him rise above her - no matter how grave the cost. LOVED IT!
