It's 1995. Fresh off the bus from New York City, a broken-hearted 35-year-old named Anna Pigeon takes her first job as a park employee: a decidedly unglamorous, seasonal stint at the Glen Canyon National Recreational Area. On her day off, she goes hiking alone in the park—never to return. Her co-workers assume she's moved on since her cabin is cleaned out. But when Anna wakes up—trapped at the bottom of a well, naked, with no supplies and no memory of how she got there—she must draw upon all of her strength, courage, and skill to survive. Because whoever set Anna's trap isn't through with her yet…

This "prequel" to the series tells how Anna Pigeon left New York City to become a park ranger in Arizona.

Anna Pigeon’s first adventure, before she joined the park service, before she grew into the tough-as-nails park ranger we love to follow. In some ways, it makes the book very strange, because it’s not the character we know, or at least, not yet. It’s certainly gripping, though.

Nevada Barr continues to write great Anna Pigeon novels. I love the character, as I too am a park ranger and can relate to her. Based in the Glen Canyon area.

Like the Prey series by John Sanford, Ms. Barr has put new life into her Anna Pigeon series by going back in time to when Anna Pigeon was a new seasonal Park Ranger. John Sanford did a similar thing with his Lucas Davenport character. If you are a fan of these popular series, it is great fun to see the protagonists at a younger age

This is a prequel to the Anna Pigeon book series. The Anna that we meet here has not yet honed her sleuthing and survival skills. We learn a lot about her, including why she goes into the law enforcement aspect of rangering. I enjoyed the description of the scenery at the park as well.
