I've owned this book for years, and I can't think of a better introduction to "back to basics" than this. Don't confuse this with other guides written by well meaning, but inexperienced...idealists. John Seymour is pragmatic, with more than a bit of the old-school European farmer in him, and careful readers will catch glimpses of a very dry humor. The book is logically arranged, each section covering different aspects of a self-sufficient farm: gardening, animal husbandry, maintaining a household, etc. Seymour has a way of explaining things so that they're fully understood, even if you've never looked into the topic before; brick-making comes to mind. I also really love the illustrations, some are necessary for understanding Seymour's instructions, some are just nice to look at. I have one small criticism, or maybe more of a caution to other readers: Seymour lives in Ireland, so if your climate is very different from Ireland's, his planting guide is no use to you, and some of the crops he writes about may not grow in your area at all (so it goes with all gardening books). Overall, this is a useful, practical, and entertaining book, with a permanent place on my bookshelves.

This is a good beginner homesteading book. It has a general overview of most areas of interest that homesteaders may choose to pursue, including many traditional crafts and fix-it xolutions.

This book has it ALL! From how to raise animals to harvesting various vegetables and even how to lay out a farm and provide your own energy - this book is very informative. I went out and bought this book after checking it out, and I don't even have a farm. :-)

I enjoyed reading this book. It has a lot of illustrations and how to's that are great for a beginner hobby farmer.
