The story begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel and Stephan about their former colleague David. All three have been venerated for decades by Israel because of the secret mission that they embarked on for their country back in 1965-1966, when the trio tracked down Nazi war criminal Dieter Vogel, the feared Surgeon of Birkenau, in East Berlin. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team's mission was accomplished - or was it?

Suspenseful story, but something's missing in the telling. It's hard to put your finger on it, but I was left not really caring enough about the main characters, perhaps because of its "revenge is necessary" plot. Also, not all the protagonists were likable. I agree that Nazi war criminals should be brought to justice, but without more backstory I didn't really think this film got the message across.

A bit difficult to follow at times but a decent movie. No awards for this one but at the end found it to come together.

This is a very good movie, psychological thriller with a great cast, Helen Mirren, Ciaran Hinds, Tom Wilkinson, etc.....three Mossad agents go to Berlin to capture the Butcher of Birkenau and transport him to Israel for trial shortly after WW2, but the plan goes off the rails and they have to cope....how they cope is the theme of the tale, good stuff.....

I like this movie verrrry much. I like the idea, the characters and, of course, the ending. This movie is about a woman named Rachel, who was sent on a mission 20 years ago with two men David and Stephan. The reason that they were sent was to kill a crazy doctor who was doing experiments on people. I won't continue so you can enjoy it and be excited for the ending. This movie is appropriate for 13 years and over and I give this movie 7.5/10.

Very good and well acted movie. Helen Mirren is fantastic, as always. I found this movie to be believable and I sympathize with people who did the work they did and the secrets they had to keep.

Good writing but the plot was a little hard to follow. Cast uniformly good.

It's far-fetched to think that three people who've joined the Mossad, an organization whose stock in trade is dishonesty--see e.g. the Lavon Affair or ask Mordechai Vanunu or Victor Ostrovsky--would be so troubled by the truth. Their whole operation in Berlin was built on deception and assuming false identities. The country they serve is built on lies: the chosen people, promised land, "a land without a people for a people without a land," most moral army in the world, only democracy in the Middle East, etc. ad nauseum. In this regard, the only believable Israeli main character in the whole movie is Stephan.

I knew nothing of the original movie or the story. In spite of the negative comments, it was a heart stopper movie for me. This is a true suspense movie, whether the story is true or not. I chose it because Helen Mirren was in the movie.

This is a sad story, but was worth watching. The message:
Not telling the truth can often have devastating lifelong results.

Doktor Bernhardt: Do it. You want to do it... Do it.

Young Rachel: [finishes shaving his neck]

Doktor Bernhardt: That's right. I'd forgotten. You Jews never knew how to kill. Only how to die.
