Excellent and beautifully filmed~ sometimes quiet and contemplative. Olivia Hussey is especially beautiful as Mary ~ 420

This has got to be one of the best filmed movies of the gospel. The number of big name Hollywood stars who acted in this movie (most did it for free) is a testimony on the performance of the movie.

the days where every single act was shrouded in ritual and reverance to God. those israelis were weird.

This film is over 6 hours long. Don't plan to watch it all at one time.
Every scene is choreographed to end up being posed like an old Italian Tableau. Long stares without dialog or movement.
The story closely follows the Biblical account but has a noticably Roman Catholic slant (ie. Mary has no other children).
This movie takes the beautiful, exciting, biblical, gospel story and transforms it into a ponderous, boring, exercise in tedium.

The movie (released in 1977) was filmed mostly in Morocco and Tunisia. The colour is good (and nicely suited to today's wide flat screen TVs), there are lots of long distant shots, and the places look like the places they are suppose to be.

The directing and acting are very accomplished. The director is Franco Zeffirelli. Robert Powell plays the role of Jesus (with kind and quiet determination) and Olivia Hussey plays the role of Mary (she also played the role of Juliet in Zeffirelli's version of Romeo and Juliet), and the rest of the roles feature a "star-studded international cast" (and all seem to be well cast and comfortable in their roles).
