In "The Fallen Idol, " some hard truths are learned by Felipe, the young son of the French Ambassador in London, when he witnesses cruel Mrs. Baines' fatal fall and then lies to the police about what he saw. Felipe's only aim is to protect Mrs. Baines' adulterous husband, the family butler whom Felipe idolizes. Graham Greene is a master of his craft... which to me is making you uncomfortable with the conflicting morals of human nature. Here, he pins loyalty to comrades against loyalty to personal moral code. It is heart breaking and infuriating to see this story unfold in front of the person situated to have to make this decision.
