Only okay, HOLLYWOODLAND failed to live up its promise. Ben Affleck delivered a standout performance as disillusioned Superman actor George Reeves, but that sparkle isn't enough to sustain this uneven snore-fest. You need to have something, just one element flourished, but unfortunately Ben Affleck's character was hidden in plain sight, buried beneath a pile of nothingness. I expected a thrilling murder mystery amid the shadows of classic Tinseltown glamour, but HOLLYWOODLAND is merely a grumbling narrative, and with its lacklustre execution and dimensionless characters, nothing feels intriguing. I was simply disappointed. I wish it had dared to do more. Alas, I couldn't recommend HOLLYWOODLAND.

I'd breezed over this title in the past, completely unaware of the premise. Had I known it focused on the circumstances surrounding George Reeves' mysterious death, I would have watched it sooner. Brody was well suited for the tenacious P.I. sniffing around the intimidating and omnipotent MGM studio mogul's trail. The three optional scenarios presented for Reeves' demise were all quite feasible and leaves one to wonder what really happened.

A fictionalized account of the still unsolved shooting death of the original TV superman. The film offers possible solutions and the viewer is left to consider what the true events could have been. Consequently, with this approach, it's truer in its telling than many fictional who dunit's where the crime is explained at the end. The central character is fully presented through Ben Affleck's acting, a real plus in this type of film.

Surprisingly good. Adrien Brody and Ben Affleck are outstanding; Diane Lane mediocre. A sad tale yet based on a real death. Definitely worth seeing.

I can recall the day that the headline of
the LA Times told of Reeves' suicide.

I was 14, and we had just moved to
California.

I love this movie, as it shows (pretty
accurately) LA as it looked and
society at the time. The settings,
costumes, music, are all right on.

Good acting by all.

This was a well acted, period piece crime drama. I enjoyed it, but the pacing was slow. The look and feel of the movie was what I would qualify as "noir" or "neo-noir". Brody turns in another great performance of the private dick, Lane as the aging holly-wife and Affleck does a great job as Reeves. Long movie that could be boring to some but I liked it.

Liked the old Hollywood feel of the film. Pretty interesting murder mystery--keeps you guessing. I liked Adrian Brody's performance.

Hollywood neo-noir is as its finest in Hollywoodland. How did TV's Superman live & how & why did he really die? An interesting premise explored in this well crafted delight. Adrien Brody is stellar as grizzled anything-for-a-buck detective who ends up investigating the death of TV kid superstar Superman actor George Reeves. Ben Affleck is great as TV's Superman and this film presents us with a possible sad reality for this actor who is largely embarrassed of his Superman role and desperately craves to do important work in his chosen craft. Diane Lane is excellent as Affleck's much older love interest who pays for George's house and suites while falling for her kept man along the way.
But who killed Superman? That question along with who was George Reeves provides a fascinating vehicle for this very good film neo noir.
