A freshman writing course should use this as an example of how dangerous flashback is as a literary tool. The plots, both of them, stumble back and forth like drunks across one another until the reader is confused, lost, ready to commit murder against the author.

Told by a woman who is trying to forget the past, this book reveals a story of human desire, jealousy, and betrayal. Jean has accepted a photography assignment off the Isles of Shoals. She is to photograph the abandoned scene of a century old murder on Smuttynose Island. She is joined by her husband and daughter on a boat manned by her husband?s brother and sensuous girlfriend. Almost at once, Jean finds the tight quarters too confining and open to suggestion. Her own fears and jealousy surface immediately, and are echoed in the story of the murder. The portentous atmosphere on the boat, and in the flashback story, lead the reader to a shocking conclusion.
