I am rereading Edna O"Brien's books and found that "A Pagan Place", published in 1970, stands the test of time very well. It tells of a place in Western Ireland which has almost disappeared, a place of poverty, superstition, bigotry and ignorance. The story is of the harm done to a girl growing up in this environment and the way in which she attempts to escape. The novel is written very effectively in the second person. Recommended.
